A Surprising Pattern Spotted Within The First 5000 Digits Of Pi
The sort of thing i love about pi is how its digits appear randomly, though no one has proved this mathematically. A close look at the numbers shows no pattern in how often each digit from 0 to 9 appears. For example, similar patterns consisting of the same digits appear only after position 250,000. This is a very small probability. But, despite the endless string of unpredictable digits that make up pi, its not what we call a truly random number.
It appears at 386,980,412 position. The sequence 999999 occurs in the first 1,000 digits of pi. Chance of this is less than 0. 0995% (1 in 1,005) A surprising fact is that if pi is a normal number, then any sequence of digits you can name, you will find within pi. For example, at position 768 in the digits of pi, there are six 9s appearing consecutively. Pi might look random but it's full of hidden patterns published on: 14 march 2016 writing for the conversation, steve humble discusses the diversity of patterns that can be seen in the digits that make up pi.
